Student Credit Cards

You should set up a credit card in your name with a local bank or major credit card company. A credit card is handy for covering some expenses while waiting for money from your job or parents and makes it easy to purchase online items such as airline tickets. However, be careful not to use your credit too much and build up large loan balances that are difficult to repay.

Most banking institutions will offer students a major credit card when setting up a checking and savings account. Make sure this card is separate from your bank ATM card. A credit card is a must for emergencies and will need to have at least a minimum charge limit of $500-$1000.

Features you should look for in a student credit card include:

No annual fee

No co-signer required

Low introductory interest rates

Available online banking service with 24/7 access to accounts

Overdraft protection is an optional feature you may want for your credit card.
