Students who maintain legal residence with their parents may be covered by their family’s homeowners’ policy for loss of personal property while living in college residence halls; ask your family’s insurance agent if you’re covered under your current policy. Depending on the coverage and deductible amounts of your insurance, you may wish to purchase your own Renter’s Insurance plan. In future years, if you move off campus it is likely your family’s homeowners’ insurance will not cover your personal property.
Many colleges and universities offer affordable Renter’s Insurance through companies who specialize in student insurance policies. Policies for as little as $45 per year are adequate for many students. Check with your school if you are interested in purchasing your own insurance for protection of your personal property.
If you are taking a car to college, make sure you have automobile insurance. In addition to the basic coverage of liability, uninsured motorist, and collision, it is recommended you have Comprehensive Coverage to insure against theft and vandalism.
