Make your travel arrangements early. You don’t want to make last minute travel plans only to discover there are serious problems, such as no airline seats are available the day you need to fly to college or the day you want to return home for vacation.
Thanksgiving is the most important holiday in which to plan well in advance. Airline availability fills up quickly, especially on the Wednesday before and the Sunday after Thanksgiving; look at the academic calendar on your college’s website for the start and end of Thanksgiving vacation. As soon as you know your schedule of classes, book your flights for travel during this holiday.
The same situation exists for semester/winter breaks, but planning for these holidays is not as crucial because colleges start and end their semester/winter breaks at different times.
