Final Selection of a College Major

Finalizing your college major selection is important, but not absolutely essential.  It is helpful to know what major you’re planning to take (the major you’re declaring) when completing college applications, but entering college with as “undecided” is alright, too.  Keep in mind that most college students change majors during their freshman or sophomore years, so being unsure of which major to declare as a high school student is perfectly acceptable.

However, BE WARNED!  While it’s acceptable to enter college with an undeclared major, not choosing a major early in your college career can make it difficult to graduate in 4 years.

NOTE:  If you are undecided in a major, but really want to go to particular colleges and universities, you may consider declaring a major that is not popular on each campus.  If a major department has trouble filling it’s quota of students and you apply declaring that major, you chances of getting accept will be increased.  Once you are enrolled, you should be able to change majors once you decide on which major is the most appealing to you.  Check with each school about the ease or difficulty of switching majors during your college freshman or sophomore years.
