Recommended Essay Format

A few important format guidelines for college and university admission essays are provided below:

1.     Introductory paragraph – this should give the essay’s controlling theme.

Make your introductory paragraph interesting!  You will either capture or lose the reader’s interest in the first paragraph.  More importantly, the opening sentence in the essay MUST grab the attention of the admissions officer reading your application and to draw him/her into your essay.  Make the opening sentence interesting to catch the reader’s interest immediately.

The last sentence in the introductory paragraph typically is the subject/thesis statement that presents the main discussion point of the essay.

2.    Two-to-four body paragraphs should come next.

These paragraphs should develop your essay theme through examples and detailed experiences and build upon each other. The final body paragraph will contain your most moving and important information.

Hold the reader’s attention with a steady and logical flow of ideas and sentences.  Get your ideas and the overall message across to the reader clearly.

3.     Concluding paragraph.

Leave the reader with a strong ending and lasting impression.  Remember to answer the “Why” – always include an analysis of the essay subject and its impact on you.  Give your personal insights.
