Searching
and Deciding on “Best-Fit” Colleges
When your son/daughter begins searching for colleges and universities,
discuss any restrictions to their selection of schools early in the
process. If there are absolute financial or geographic restrictions
that limit the range of colleges your student can consider, let them
know as soon as possible. You don’t want anyone wasting time
researching colleges and universities they won’t be able to attend.
However, DO NOT eliminate colleges
and universities based solely on their “sticker price” (the
cost of attendance).
Regardless
of your income level, many private selective schools offer significant
scholarships and grants that make it more affordable to attend an expensive
selective school than a cheaper school with a lower tuition. Keep
in mind your child’s dream school may turn out to be the least
expensive of all colleges they apply to because of the large amount
of financial awards given by that school.
Encourage your son/daughter
to apply to a good range of colleges and universities, but they must
decide which school to apply to and which school to attend. |
