Who to Ask

Selecting the best people to ask for recommendations is extremely important.  These people must know you well enough to write about your best qualities, achievements, talents, and abilities in order to make a great impression on admission officers.  Your recommenders should be someone you interact with often.

Teacher Recommendation Forms and Letters of Recommendation should be completed by teachers who know your stellar work in the subject you plan to major in.  For example, if you plan to major in biology, have your biology and math teachers write recommendations (only if you’re an outstanding student in those teachers' classes). If you plan to major in English, have your high school English and Literature teachers write recommendations.

Keep in mind that your best recommendations may not come from teachers that gave you top grades.  For example, a teacher to whom you demonstrated steady improvement over the semester may have great things to say about your work ethic and class participation.

You may also want to ask your employer or a community leader if they know you well and can write about your best qualities and achievements.
