Making It Easy
Make it as easy as possible
for the adults writing your recommendations. Give
them a neat and complete packet of all forms needed with a brief cover
letter clearly stating what you’re asking for (example cover
letter is provided below) and what you would like them to discuss in
their recommendation.
A packet should include:
1. A cover
letter.
2. Paper recommendation forms for all the colleges that require
them with the top portion filled out.
3. Your student
résumé
(if you don’t have a student résumé, provide a
completed
Counselor
Information Sheet).
4. An unofficial copy of your grade transcripts.
5. Self-addressed, stamped envelopes.
In your cover letter, mention
the accomplishments you would like the recommender to write about. For example, if you plan to major in science,
have a science teacher discuss your excellent scientific analytical
skills and outstanding lab work, your involvement in science club,
etc. If you plan to major in political science, have the person
writing your recommendation discuss your involvement in Junior Statesmen
of America, how you are an excellent class officer and leader, etc. If
you have involvement with community service, have the person writing
your recommendation discuss your dedication to the community and to
helping others. Be sure your recommendations emphasize to readers your
greatest strengths!
Providing a copy of your student résumé to
the people writing your recommendation is a MUST. Your student résumé will
help them remember all the activities in which you participated and
the things you completed throughout your high school career.
In addition, when submitting
a request for a recommendation to your high school counselor, it is recommended to include a completed copy
of the Counselor Information Sheet. This completed form will
provide additional information the counselor may use to write an excellent,
informed recommendation. |
