Campus-Based Scholarships and Grants
Campus-based scholarships and grants provide the most available “free” money.
Important! Because the best source of scholarships and grants
is the colleges themselves, private colleges and universities are real
viable option for students with very little money for college; so don’t
rule out applying to private colleges and universities. Thousands
of high school students receive enough scholarship and grant money
from private colleges and universities to make it less expensive to
attend a private university than a State College.
Campus-based scholarships and grants include Need-based,
Merit-based, athletic, and specific attribute awards.
NOTE: If you have a family financial situation that is not fully
addressed by the financial aid process, consider writing a letter of
special
circumstance
to the colleges you apply to. Special circumstances may include
loss of a parent’s
income, bankruptcy of a family business, large unexpected medical bills,
etc. Colleges have the authority to review special circumstances
on a case-by-case basis and increase student financial aid awards,
if appropriate.
NOTE: Each private college has its own level of financial aid
resources to give as scholarships and grants; this amount may vary
from year to year. If a particular college is a student’s
top choice, don’t hesitate to apply for admission just because
very few campus-based awards were offered the previous year. This
year could be when the college is able to offer several large scholarships
because they recently received a $20 million donation. |
