Student Athletes – Plan to Market Yourself to College
Coaches.
If you’re interested in playing intercollegiate sports and trying
to earn athletic scholarships, plan to market yourself extensively to
the coaches at the colleges and universities of your choice.
One of the biggest mistakes high school athletes make is waiting for
college coaches to notice them. If you’re serious about playing
college sports, there are steps you can take to get college coaches to
notice you.
Plan on making a 5-minute video highlighting your athletic performances
for coaches to review and evaluate your athletic ability. This
video should not be a game film; rather, it should be an edited version
featuring your best performances in a number of games or practices.
The most convenient and effective way to put your information and videos
into the hands of college coaches is to sign up for online communities
designed for high school athletes and coaches. These online communities
allow you to complete an online profile (your biography, physical and
game stats) for up to three sports. Also, videos and photos of
your play can be uploaded. College coaches can then access and
review your profile information and videos and consider you for recruitment. Athletes
can track their progress with the college recruitment process by checking
off steps they have completed on the NCAA Clearinghouse Checklist.

Also, talk with your high school coach and ask him/her to assess your
athletic ability so you can get a true understanding of your potential
for playing college sports.
