Scholarships and Grants

MyCollegeCalendar highly recommends that all students and parents seek out scholarships and grants. Scholarships and grants are basically free money that is almost always tax-free and never has to be repaid. Colleges, organizations, and individuals that award scholarships seek students who truly deserve them; deserving students are generally sought in one or more of the following categories: Financial need, Academic talent, Athletic talent, Outstanding community service, Scientific achievement, Leadership and more.

Scholarships Overview
Begin researching scholarships (if you haven’t already).  If you haven’t registered for free national scholarship search services, do it now.  Learn what scholarships and grants are offered by foundations, clubs, businesses, and organizations and receive e-mail reminders of when to apply.

Maximize Scholarships
Parents - maximize your student’s potential for need-based scholarships and grants.  The more income you earn and the more cash reserves you have, the smaller your student’s need-based scholarship and grant awards will be. 

 

Campus Based Scholarships
Campus-based scholarships and grants provide the most available “free” money. 

 

Local and Regional Scholarships
Apply to all local and regional scholarships you qualify for.  You don’t need straight “A’s” to win these awards; numerous “B” average students receive significant local and regional scholarships.

 

National Scholarships
National scholarships are extremely difficult to win.  Typically, there are so many applicants for each scholarship that the competition is extremely tough; to be competitive your application must be absolutely stellar. 

 

Scholarship Process
DON’T assume you’re NOT eligible for scholarships and grants.  For need-based scholarships and grants, there is no real cut-off for parents earning too much income.

 

Scholarship Applications
Winning scholarship applications don’t simple list and discuss a student’s activities and awards, they paint a vivid and impressive portrait of the student applicant. 

 

Scholarship Essays
Scholarship essays should be written to let the selection committee get to know WHO you are, to make a lasting impression, and to encourage members of the committee to care about you.

 

Scholarship Pitfalls
Sometimes parents encourage students to apply to all available scholarships to increase the chances of winning scholarship money.  This cannot be done effectively.

 

Scholarship Scams
Students and parents should be aware that scholarship scams exist.  Warning signs of possible scams include: You are required to pay a fee.

 

Student Atheletes
As a student athlete, your most obvious focal point will be sports scholarships.

 

ROTC Scholarships
ROTC scholarships and programs are offered by the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.  ROTC scholarships can be as much as a full-ride scholarship, paying 100% of college tuition, housing, and miscellaneous expenses.
