MyCollegeCalendar highly recommends
that all students and parents seek out scholarships and grants. Scholarships
and grants are basically free money that is almost always tax-free
and never has to be repaid. Colleges, organizations, and individuals
that award scholarships seek students who truly deserve them;
deserving students are generally sought in one or more of the
following categories: Financial need, Academic talent,
Athletic talent, Outstanding community service, Scientific achievement,
Leadership and more.

Maximize
Scholarships
Parents - maximize your student’s potential for need-based scholarships
and grants. The more income you earn and the more cash reserves
you have, the smaller your student’s need-based scholarship and
grant awards will be.
Campus
Based Scholarships
Campus-based scholarships and grants provide the most available “free” money.
Local
and Regional Scholarships
Apply to all local and regional scholarships you qualify for. You
don’t need straight “A’s” to win these awards;
numerous “B” average students receive significant local and
regional scholarships.
National
Scholarships
National scholarships are extremely difficult to win. Typically,
there are so many applicants for each scholarship that the competition
is extremely tough; to be competitive your application must be absolutely
stellar.
Scholarship
Process
DON’T assume you’re NOT eligible for scholarships and grants. For
need-based scholarships and grants, there is no real cut-off for parents
earning too much income.
Scholarship
Applications
Winning scholarship applications don’t simple list and discuss
a student’s activities and awards, they paint a vivid and impressive
portrait of the student applicant.
Scholarship
Essays
Scholarship essays should be written to let the selection committee get
to know WHO you are, to make a lasting impression, and to encourage members
of the committee to care about you.
Scholarship
Pitfalls
Sometimes parents encourage students to apply to all available scholarships
to increase the chances of winning scholarship money. This cannot
be done effectively.
Scholarship
Scams
Students and parents should be aware that scholarship scams exist. Warning
signs of possible scams include: You are required to pay a fee.
Student
Atheletes
As a student athlete, your most obvious focal point will be sports scholarships.
ROTC
Scholarships
ROTC scholarships and programs are offered by the Army, Air Force,
Navy and Marine Corps. ROTC scholarships can be as much as a
full-ride scholarship, paying 100% of college tuition, housing, and
miscellaneous expenses.
