Review and Correct Your SAR.

When your Student Aid Report (SAR) is received, review the following important information:

1.  Expected Family Contribution (EFC) – Top of page 1.  Your EFC is the amount of money your family is expected to contribute to college expenses as determined by the U.S. Department of Education using the “federal methodology.”  Keep in mind you may pay less than the EFC shown on your SAR because numerous colleges us their own methodology to calculate your EFC (called the “institutional methodology”).

2.  Data Release Number (DRN) – Top of page 1.  This is a reference number you’ll need to make the SAR available to colleges not originally included on your FAFSA.  Also, the DRN is needed to change specific personal information (such as your address).

3.  Verification – Top of page 1.  If there is an asterisk next to your EFC, you have been selected for verification.  Verification means you will have to send additional financial documentation to the schools listed on your FAFSA.  Additional documentation includes copies of finalized federal tax returns and other verification documents.  Because so much aid is given on a first-come, first-served basis, send requested verification documentation as soon as possible.

4.  All FAFSA information.  All the information you entered on the FAFSA will be shown on the SAR.  Check the information for accuracy.  If there are errors, make corrections as soon as possible.
