Plan to Visit Colleges and Universities Without Your Parents; Stay Overnight in Student Dorms.

Plan to visit colleges and universities that have accepted you without your parents (if you can) and without a trained tour guide by your side.  Stay overnight in the student dorms; you will get an inside look at the campus and the students.  Spending the night in student dorms will give you the unique opportunity to check out all aspects of dorm life, experience campus activities first-hand, observe the types of students that attend that college or university, and see the campus and the social scene at night.

While on-campus, attend a class and note the quality of teaching and classroom discussions.  Visit with college students and try to get a “feel” for the college.  Ask yourself, “Will I fit in at this college next year?”  Bring a notebook so you can write down your impressions.

Overnight visits are very helpful when making the final decision between two or more colleges on your acceptance list.

Contact college admissions offices a couple of weeks (or more) ahead of time to make overnight arrangements.

Some colleges designate specific weekends for student applicant overnight stays.  Call admission offices to determine the weekend dates.
